We craft the book, You create the story...

What Goes Into a Handcrafted Book? A Peek Behind the Press.

Imagine holding a handcrafted book in your hands.
The quiet weight of it.
The gentle ripple of decorative or marbled papers under your fingertips.
A faint scent — leather, perhaps, or paper — rises as you turn the pages.

Before a handcrafted book holds your words, it holds the hands, tools, and time of a maker. Every cut, stitch, and hand-tooled detail is a story in itself — one built slowly, patiently, by someone who still believes in the beauty of the slow made item.

Here’s a closer look at what goes into a handcrafted book.

The Elements of a Handcrafted Book

The Cover
We know the saying goes - ‘Don’t judge a book by it’s cover,’ however, a book’s first impression is its cover — and in a handcrafted book, it’s more than just a surface. The heavy cover boards  are carefully covered in cloth, leather, or decorative paper, chosen as much for feel as for appearance. Texture matters. A cover should invite you in, not just protect what’s inside.

The Paper
Paper for handcrafted books is never just paper. It might have a soft, torn deckled edge; it might carry the quiet strength of the right grain direction, ensuring the pages turn naturally. Weight matters too — thick enough to last, soft enough to welcome ink.

The Binding
Binding is where craftsmanship sings. A traditional section sewn method holds the pages together with strength while allowing the pages to open flat. The spine is rounded by hand, glued and strengthened to create a book that opens just right — not too stiff, not too loose.

The Endpapers
A hidden delight: the endpapers. Sometimes marbled by hand, sometimes printed, sometimes embossed letterpress — always carefully selected. These first and last pages are chosen to enhance the cover colour and design, setting the tone before the story begins.

The Finishing Touches
Marker ribbons, decorative hand tooling, foil-stamped titles — it’s the small details that set handcrafted books apart and say, this was made for you. At SB Libris, our handcrafted books can be personalised with embossed initials, names, or bespoke titles — creating a truly one-of-a-kind piece meant to be treasured.

Why It Matters

In a world of mass production, handcrafted books slow time.
They invite us to notice.
To run a hand along a spine and feel the human hours pressed inside.
To know — deep down — that what holds our stories is a story in itself.

When you hold a handcrafted book, you're holding care, legacy, and an enduring connection to craftsmanship that refuses to be rushed.

Mark life’s moments with something lasting.
Our handcrafted journals, albums and guestbooks can be personalised to hold your memories, milestones, and stories for generations.

Creative Mums — Our Favourite Gifts from the Bindery & Beyond

Some of the most meaningful gifts are the ones that don’t shout.
They’re the ones you can hold — or hold onto. A quiet book. A handwritten card. A beautiful tool that lasts a lifetime.

If your mum is the kind who loves a handwritten letter, who stops to admire a well-made pen or runs her fingers across the cover of a book before opening it — this is for her.

Here are a few of our favourite gift ideas for creative, sentimental, and nostalgic mums — from our shelves to yours.

1. Classic Full Leather Journal

Crafted upstairs in the bindery using archival-quality paper and traditional hand-sewn techniques, these journals are made to be treasured. Each one features decorative endpapers and a fine leather cover with classic raised bands on the spine. You can really impress mum by adding monogramming, a name or title.

Perfect for: the memory-keeper, the morning writer, or the mum who loves beautiful paper
Why she’ll love it: It feels like a book that’s always belonged to her.

2. Bookbinding Kit: Learn Bookbinding at Home

This all-in-one kit includes materials and instructions to make your own hand-crafted journal — the same techniques Simon uses in the studio. Choose from a few styles, with everything neatly packed and gift-ready.

Perfect for: curious creatives, DIYers, or those who love learning by doing
Why she’ll love it: It’s hands-on, thoughtful, and gives her space to slow down.

3. Lamy Fountain Pen

A modern classic — smooth to write with, easy to refill, and designed to last. We stock them in soft pastel tones and classic black. Pair with a bottle of ink or add a notecard set.

Perfect for: letter writers, journalers, list-makers
Why she’ll love it: It turns everyday writing into a small pleasure and makes anyone's handwriting look that little bit more fancy!

4. Wax Seal Stamp

A timeless tool that adds a little ceremony to the everyday. Our brass wax seal stamps can be used on letters, of course — but also on gift wrap, handmade cards, bookmarks, even tucked into a bouquet. For something truly special, try transparent wax with pressed flowers inside.

Perfect for: creative detail-lovers, stationery enthusiasts, or anyone who loves adding a personal touch
Why she’ll love it: It turns a simple gesture into something memorable.

5. Let her choose with a Gift Card!

Who wouldn’t love the gift of time in a stationery store? Our gift cards can be used on anything — from linen-bound journals and fountain pens to future workshops and restoration work. Whether they know exactly what they love, or want to wander and see what calls to them, it’s the perfect gesture.

Perfect for: stationery lovers, creatives, or those tricky-to-buy-for mums
Why she’ll love it: A reason to linger, explore, and choose something just right.

Thoughtful Extras

The wrapping matters, too. Consider using a square of muslin or linen, tied with twine and a sprig of lavender, or select from our gorgeous array of wrap designs. Add a handwritten note — just a few lines — and tuck in a wax-sealed gift tag or one of our floral letterpress bookmarks.

These little touches often say just as much as the gift itself.
